What Factors Effect Your Stimulus Check | Back Child Support

Millions of Americans are expecting a stimulus check within the next couple of weeks.

Many Americans have heard about the forth coming stimulus check but have no idea the impact of back child support. Many do not understand what factors may impact their ability to get the money otherwise coming to them.

How much money can I get?

The Cares Act that was signed on March 27, 2020. The Act provides for individual over the age of 17 and making less than $75,000 a payment of $1,200. For married couple earning up to $150,000 this amount is $2,400. The act also provides for $500.00 per each child under the age of 17 and born before January 1, 2020.

What if I don't file taxes?

If you didn't file your 2019 taxes the IRS will use your 2018 filing. However, substantial changes since your 2018 tax filing is a reason to quickly file your 2019 taxes. Types of changes that are important include:

What if I am on Social Security Benefits?

Congress did make an allowance for the Americans that are currently receiving Social Security benefits to receive their stimulus check. The IRS will deposit the stimulus check into the bank account on file with the Social Security Administration.

Back Child Support

Parents owing back child support will also find their stimulus check affected. The Debt Collection Improvement Act of 1996 does give the government the ability to offset your stimulus check. The amount of your stimulus check might be reduced by your back back child support obligations.

What Can I do to get my check?

If you have not filed your 2019 income taxes or you are not receiving Social Security benefits file as soon as possible. For low income individual there is a free option to file by using the IRS Free Filing Program.

If the amount of back child support you owe is not significant you might consider catching up. This may result in you stimulus check being received more timely.
